I have a thing about “Monday Motivation” posts.
Don’t get me wrong, I like to see positivity on my social media timeline, things that nurture and inspire and uplift. But have you ever wondered why we need motivation to get going on a Monday? Why aren’t we fired up and ready to go? Why aren’t we already inspired?
Perhaps if you regularly need motivation to get you through your working week, it’s a sign you either need a break, or you need a change – a drastic one.
I used to experience Monday morning dread like it’s no tomorrow.
In fact. It wasn’t even Monday morning dread, it used to seep in on Sunday. A sense of sadness and mostly anxiety which always kicked in around dinner time. Coupled with text messages from colleagues on Sundays about the week ahead, invading my family time. Worry about what I was going to be presented with the following morning.
I hadn’t realised, until I took the leap to leave my job and run my own business, that I had been experiencing and tolerating this as a normal state for YEARS. I am here to tell you, feeling like this on a regular basis is not normal. Work doesn’t have to induce regular anxiety, work most definitely shouldn’t be inducing prolonged periods of stress, it shouldn’t induce fear and it most definitely shouldn’t require you to have to psyche yourself up on a weekly basis with a number of instagram quotes to get you feeling inspired for the week ahead.
Since making the decision to leave my job and in turn improve my lifestyle, I have never experienced Sunday night dread since. Don’t get me wrong, the life of an entrepreneur comes with its own very real pressures and challenges, so I am not suggesting the answer is to quit your job and run your own business, quite the contrary. I am saying there is so much importance in being able to recognise when a stressful state has become “normalised and glorified.” I am saying that there is value in consistently doing something you love, something that nurtures you and makes your soul sing.
Do what you love and you’ll never have a problem with Mondays.
We spend SO much of our time, our lives, in the workplace and if it is not fulfilling, it seeps into our relationships, our home life, our self worth and our overall feeling about our place in the world.
We’re conditioned to fear change, but we can choose to get curious and excited about change and the infinite possibilities it brings too.
Nobody can change your circumstances or your thinking around your circumstances other than you. That is both your power and your responsibility.
SO I am writing to you today to tell you, you deserve so much MORE than what you settle for. If you don’t like something in your working life, take intentional steps to change it, OR if you don’t feel you can change it right now, alter your thinking around it. Don’t feel like you have to do it on your own either, top up your skills, seek out a support network to help you on your journey. We cannot control what life throws at us, but we can control how we choose to think, behave and experience it.
